Born in Soberton as the only child of Oliver and Kate Messam.
In 1901 the family lived in Soberton Heath (next to the Bold Forester) and his father (Oliver J) worked as a Woodsman. In 1911 they still lived in Soberton Heath and Oliver N is working as an Under Gardener.
He married Margaret Selina Leet in 1916 and had a daughter - Edith.

Died serving as a Private with Royal Army Service Corps during WWI in Tanzania, East Africa from appendicitis after the German troops had surrendered.
He is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery and commemorated on Soberton War Memorial.
