Second son (4th child) of John and Mary.
Joined the Cape Mounted Riflemen alongside his brother William, and fought in the Boer War.

Died early in WW1 in South Africa, as a Staff Sergeant with South Africa Mounted Rifles when he was struck by lightning while on duty. He was buried where he died with full military honours BARNEA SIDING BURIAL GROUND, BETHLEHEM
Commemorated on Soberton War Memorial and inside the church on the family plaque.
From plaque in Soberton St. Peter's church, he was "killed by lightning at Windhoek while on duty. November 3 1914".
