Born and grew up in East Meon to George and Sarah Deadman, he married Martha Benham and they moved to Soberton around 1890 with their 5 children. They had 11 children in total; the oldest, Samuel is buried in Soberton St. Peter's, and youngest son Harry was killed in WW1 and is commemorated on the Soberton War Memorial.
His 4th son Frank also served in the Royal Navy from 1906-1928 (no.310681), as did Samuel (1916-1919).
The 1891 the census shows the family as living in Soberton (up near Webbs Green) and Samuel working as a Agricultural Labourer. The 1901 census lists them at Cold Hill, Soberton, with Samuel working as a Navvy, with his two eldest sons (Samuel and Eli) Bricklayers, with the third (Thomas) also a Navvy.
By the 1911 census he was widowed and lived at West Street, with 6 of the children. He working as a agricultural labourer again.
