He was born in East Meon, the oldest of 11 siblings, his youngest brother Harry died in WW1.
Grew up in East Meon, before moving to Soberton around 1890.
Listed on 1891 census in Soberton (Webbs Green area) with his agricultural labourer father, mother and 6 siblings (at that time),
By 1901 the family lived on Cold Hill, Soberton, and he was working as a Bricklayer's Apprentice.
By 1911 he was a bricklayer, living with the family, now on West Street.
He married Miriam in 1914 in Soberton.
4th August 1916 he joined the Army (Agricultural Company in the Labour Corps - no.395125) and left 4th April 1919
The 1939 Register lists him, Miriam and two sons (Alick and Leslie) at No.2 School Hill Cottages, with his occupation listed as Farm Cater.

His enlistment documents list him as 5' 8"
