Born in Soberton as the second of ten children. He was baptised 10th March 1867 at St Peter's Soberton.
The 1871 census lists the family lived at Old Pound, Soberton. His father was a farmer of 140 acres. They were still living in Soberton by the 1881 census, and his father farmed 300 acres. By 1891 the family was living at Middlington Farm House where he was working on his father's farm.
11th April 1892 he took out a marriage license and married Louise Mary Holmes at St Clements Danes in Middlesex
The 1901 census lists him and Louise living on Hoe Farm, Bishop's Waltham with 4 children. He was working as a farmer (employing men). By 1911 the census lists them at Peak Farm, East Meon. They have been married 18 years and have 7 children. Henry is working as a farmer, with his eldest daughter (Daisy) doing Dairy work, and eldest son (George) also working on the farm.
